Fitzroy, Melbourne

The big yellow door on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy leads you in to one of my favourite restaurants in Australia!

@charcoallanefitzroy is a combination of delicious food, native Australian flavours, creative cuisine and hospitality training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. Their menu showcases the incredible array of fruits, vegetables and herbs this land has to offer, by creatively combining them to produce modern native Australian cuisine. The team behind the scenes is a diverse mix of staff and young trainees who share a passion for native Australian food, culture and hospitality.

During the #humankindfilmfestival we sat watching @inmyblooditruns while feasting on pretty much everything on their takeaway menu that night - and it was INCREDIBLE! Kangaroo and lemon myrtle saganaki sliders, croccodile nuggets, kangaroo pies and emu spring rolls were chomped away along with two big native salads. Not being able to make a decision on what to order for dessert we ended up with all three... flavours of lemon myrtle, strawberry gum and wattleseed coming through the beautiful little tarts and brownie.

Hungry? Curious? Charcoal Lane is open for takeaway and delivery at the moment - but I really can't wait for a grand post-lockdown re-opening. A chance to go inside that great yellow door, sit at a table and take in the whole experience.
